Title: Babel
Artist: Cildo Meireles
Date: 2001
Location: Tumblr
This live installation by Meireles features a tower of radios built similarly to the biblical Tower of Babel.  The Tower of Babel, in biblical history, was a collaboration project in attempts to build a tower that could reach Heaven. Due to the ignorant efforts of mankind to force their way into Heaven, God destroyed the tower and separated the earth into different continents with language barriers so it would be extremely difficult to try again.  Meireles’s installation is “suggestive of the incapacity to communicate as a result of all human conflict.”  Due to the radio being a live temporal performance, each experience differs from the last depending on what stations are set on which radio and which songs are playing on each radio. Every experience is a cluster of sound and language from each radio set as well as being incapable of being understood by the audience—referent to the aftermath of the biblical Tower of Babel.
